Steak and Gravy... sortof

This is a recipe my mother used to make and I've always loved it. She was always looking for ways to make things healthier without compromising flavor  and this recipe definitely achieves that! There are lots of ways you can adjust this, like adding mushrooms and onions to the pot - yum! It's a pretty simple and quick recipe and thanks to the modern invention of gravy packets it is so much easier than when Grandma made everything from scratch! Anyway, I say 'Steak and Gravy...sort of' because I use ground meat: turkey or ground beef - whatever you like. Just make sure it's a 90% or leaner variety to keep this healthy. You could also use a thin cut of beef that would otherwise be tough if cooked quickly. Just adjust the temp to 325 and the cooking time to an hour and half to increase the tenderness of the meat.

Steak and Gravy
Ingredients
1 lb of ground beef or turkey, patted out into thin patties (if mixing your own, add 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp garlic powder and 1 tsp cavender's no salt seasoning)
2 Brown or Onion Gravy packets (McCormicks is great!)
2 cups of water or beef broth
salt, pepper and garlic powder
onion and mushroom slices (optional)

Cover each patty in salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Brown patties on both sides in a well sprayed pan. You may have to brown in batches so you don't overcrowd your pot. Brown each side for about 2 minutes each.
One thing that makes this healthier is using gravy packets. These taste wonderful and are fat free!
In a separate bowl, mix gravy packets and two cups of either water or broth until blended.
Pour gravy mix over meat in the pan. It will look like a watery mess but I promise it won't stay that way.
Top with onions and mushrooms if desired, cover and simmer 30 minutes. You will now have a savory, healthy version of steak and gravy that is quick and easy!
Serve with mashed potatoes (covered in gravy of course!) and veggies. Enjoy :)
